Simon Beck is the creator of these awesome snow patterns. What he has done is walking for days on snow in his snowshoes (raquettes) along the frozen lake of Savoie in France. Each piece is sometimes as big as three football pitches! The patterns are sometimes 3D which make them even more spectacular.
How long they survive all depends on the weather. Beck designs and redesigns the patterns as new snow falls, sometimes unable to finish a piece due to significant overnight accumulations. Interestingly enough, he said, The main reason for making them was because I can no longer run properly due to problems with my feet, so plodding about on level snow is the least painful way of getting exercise. In a comment in his Facebook page he says: “As for ones state, very tired, usually I continue until i am too tired to do any more”.
For another artwork he says: “It is tricky to know where to put the center of these things. It’s annoying when part of the design goes up the hill to the left, but if you use the lake in its entirety part of the artwork gets hidden from what is in other respects the best viewpoint.”
He has also marked one of his works with letters and explains what minor errors he has made. I have put the comments as caption.
