A man lived for five weeks without a heart

In 2011, two scientists from Texas Heart Institute implanted an artificial heart into a 55-year-old man from Texas. The man lived for 5 weeks afterwards without a heart. He dies because of an underlying desease, although his “heart” was working properly.

The native heart of the man was replaced by two turbine-like blood pumps tied together.

The technique was successfully tried on 50 cows before Craig Lewis became the first living man without a heart.
